Liposuction For Arms
The What, Why, and How of this popular cosmetic surgery
As we age, many women find that despite exercise, a healthy diet, hundreds of push-ups and pilates classes, that our arms somehow don’t improve or yield similar results like the rest of our body. Somehow, our arms appear to be unaffected by the majority of our efforts, and seem to enlarge with each passing year. Even women who are thin and extremely healthy have found that there is little to do to tighten the arms and reduce fat once it occurs. This can be extremely distressing, especially for women who work in entertainment, modeling, or are showing arm skin for their jobs. But despite profession, this is an irritating and uncomfortable phenomenon for all women. While this is a common occurrence in women, men can also receive Arm Liposuction surgery, though it is definitely more of a trouble zone in females.
The main goal of liposuction is to reduce the disproportionate appearance of the arm and re-create what a normal proportion would look like. When we are young and our skin is taught, our upper arms are not much larger than the circumference of the arm below the elbow. With a good liposuction treatment, we can successfully achieve a more youthful appearance. Another goal is to grant the patient the self-confidence to wear clothing that they used to love to wear, for example a sleeveless blouse or a swimsuit. Feeling self-conscious in social situations or even just in front of the mirror can be devastating for self-confidence and a person’s willingness to socialize. Even when arms are relaxed, the aging arm can often tend to appear larger than usual when flat against the side of the body, and can cause the person to look larger than they actually are in photographs and in real life.
This cosmetic surgery is a relatively simple one, not different to typical liposuction of the stomach, thighs or hips. Older liposuction techniques would typically include an additional excision of skin from the inner side of the arm which would result in unsightly scars. We don’t like the results achieved by this outdated practice, so we chose to use tumescent liposuction of the arms which uses microcannulas. This means that excision of the skin might not be necessary, and therefore no scarring.
After-surgery care for arm liposuction is relatively simple, with just a moderate degree of compression necessary for only a few days. Additionally, drainage from the arms usually lasts less than a couple of days after surgery. Dressings consist of absorbent pads, initially held in place by tubular elastic netting, over which are wrapped elastic non-adhesive ace-type bandages. The patient can usually remove and re-apply these dressings without extra assistance. Luckily for patients of arm liposuction surgery, the postoperative improvement is very rapid. Virtually every patient can enjoy a significant visual and physical improvement within just a few days after surgery.
